In Shavei Zion, Hillel and Haviva attended the school run by Seev and Margalith Berlinger. Even in his old age, Hillel had only the best opinion of his teacher:

"Seev was an excellent educator. Everything I undertook later in my life is due to his education."

Hillel was a very good student and top of his class.
He was also very skilled at handicrafts and liked to tinker.
For the fifth anniversary of Shavei Zion, he built a model of the settlement, which he and his classmates proudly presented on the anniversary day.
